From The Director

A Warm Welcome from the Head of School

Sue Brooks

We are thrilled that you are visiting our website!

I am so pleased that you have expressed an interest in the International Friends School (IFS). The school aims to position students through two distinct and deliberate avenues: fluent second language acquisition and stewardship and leadership locally, nationally and globally. Seattle, with it's Pacific Rim access and rich cultural fabric, is a perfect environment in which to introduce a dual-language immersion program (bi-literacy) in the context of a Quaker Friends School philosophy (compassionate global citizenry).

The International Friends School is founded on the following three fundamental beliefs that will guide everything that we do:

Quaker values, shared by all Quaker Schools across the country, foster in children profound habits of mind and character.  The Quaker values of Stewardship, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality and Service to Others are paramount in creating an ethical orientation, and a practice of compassion in a safe and engaging community. Like all best habits and practices, these are nurtured daily and begin to govern the decision making process as the child moves through their lives, in and out of school.

We also believe that it is the birthright of every child to learn another language in their early years and throughout school. This is the gift of the young developing brain and research supports that this gift leads to seriously compelling advantages.

Our third founding belief is that there is an urgent call to action to educate students who know something of the world: it's geography, cultures, languages and people. We offer a global competency framework that is critical for even the youngest of learners.

Take some time to explore our new website and please return to it often as the school develops. As with all new endeavors there is constant growth, innovation and community building.

Feel free to contact me with any questions that you have about this exciting new journey on behalf of the most curious learners in our communities, our children.

It's GREAT to be here!

With much warmth,

Sue Brooks
